熊本県八代市と鹿児島市を結ぶ南九州西回り自動車道の芦北出水道路・芦北ＩＣ～津奈木ＩＣ間（延長７・７㌔）が２月27日、開通した。南九州西回り道は計画延長約１４０㌔のうち約91㌔、65％が開通したことになる。
九州地方整備局八代河川国道事務所、熊本県、津奈木町、芦北町主催で行われた開通式典には沿線関係者など約２５０人が出席。蒲島郁夫熊本県知事は「南九州西回り道は地域振興を図る上で不可欠な道路。昭和63年の事業着手以来、国交省にご尽力いただいており、本日、芦北～津奈木間の開通という大きな華を咲かせていただいた」と挨拶。「“すべての道は熊本に通じる”という目標実現に向け、一日も早い全線開通に全力で取り組む」と熱く語った。
くまもんも参加して行われたテープカット後の通り初めでは、行き交う車両に地元児童から大きな歓声が沸くなど、歓迎ムード一色に包まれた。
同区間の南、津奈木～水俣間（延長５・６㌔）は18年度の開通を予定している。今月５日には同区間内で唯一のトンネル、小津奈木トンネルの貫通式が施工業者、西松建設の主催で開催。順調に工事は進む。
